Superluminescent diode (SLD) is an edge-emitting semiconductor light source.

SLDs are similar in geometry to lasers but have no built-in optical feedback mechanism required by LDs for stimulated emission to achieve lasing. SLDs are applied in situations where a smooth and broadband optical spectrum, combined with high spatial coherence and relatively high intensity.

SLD is a semiconductor optical amplifier with no input signal, where weak spontaneous emission into the waveguide mode is followed by strong laser amplification.
